Obituary of Karl Harries
Please share a memory of Karl to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Karl died peacefully, with friends at his side, at the Kingston General Hospital on Wednesday July 27, 2016. Karl was born in Toronto on March 1, 1936 and is survived by two sons Kent, Kevin and their families. He is also survived by his godson Matthew Hill and many, many close friends both in the Gananoque area and, indeed, around the world.
Karl was both a mining engineer and a distinguished lawyer, specializing in mineral royalties and agreements. Karl graduated in 1959 from the University of Toronto with his mining degree and later, in 1962, received his law degree from Osgoode Hall. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1982. The author of many books and papers regarding mining, he was an adjunct professor at Queen's as well as having lectured in the Faculty of Applied Science at U of T and was still regularly consulted for his expertise. Karl was the recipient of the Robert Elver Mineral Economics Award in 2010.
A kind, thoughtful, modest man Karl loved life, people and animals. He was very active in his adopted community of Gananoque to the benefit of many. Karl was instrumental in the establishment of the Gananoque Youth Centre and the BMX Park to name but two enterprises close to his heart. Karl enjoyed his Grace United Church family and was an especially enthusiastic pie salesman! He was past Chair of the Gananoque Police Service Board, having served on the Board for several years.
There will be a visitation at Tompkins Funeral Home on Wednesday August 3, 2016 from 2pm to 4pm. As per Karl's wishes, there will be no service. Donations made in Karl's name to any children's charity, the Grace United Church, the Gananoque & District Humane Society or another animal charity would be appropriate and most appreciated.
A life well lived, he has left behind a great legacy and he will be missed by many.
