There was the time that we were canoe camping on one of the islands with our dog Samson. After setting up camp we hooked up with Kathy and Jack to have dinner aboard their trawler. As we paddled out to the moored trawler for dins (with the dog) it was noted that the deck loomed several feet above us with only a ladder to get aboard. This, was problematic with the dog. Rather than returning the dog to be alone at the camp, Jack navigated the ladder and carried Samson from the tippy canoe and aboard the trawler. After an enjoyable meal, complete with wine, Jack repeated the feat by returning Samson down the ladder to the canoe without mishap. Very impressive since Samson was a 95 pound Bernese Mountain dog. Jack in action.

Dear Kathy, Jenn, and Andie,
Thanks to Jack and Michel I gained four new members of my family. From day one I felt a special bond and over time the friendship and love continued to grow.
Jack, I always admired you and knew that if I was ever in need, I could count on you.
Thank you for all the good times.
You will be missed.

Hi Kathy
Where to start….maybe the day our German Shepard Sacha tore through our hedge and frightened the prospective buyers of your home. You were the next to see the house and we kept Sacha carefully tied up….you saw and bought! It certainly makes a good story.
From there you and Jack seamlessly went from being new neighbours to close friends. We went on to see each other often and attended our children’s weddings and felt a part of your lives.
Jenn and Andie: You two are both part of this relationship as we watched you grow up.
The memories of the old neighborhood, the boat, Gan and Sutton are still fresh …there were some good times!
Kathy, Jenn and Andie…you have lost a wonderful mate and Dad.
Harald and I send you all our love
Kathy

Well I realize that I was really trying to act macho and Jack, I will really miss you. Goodbye my dear dear friend, you are still with me in my dreams. Thank you for your friendship.

Met Jack soon before him and Kathy were married. Took a motorcycle trip to see Jack, Kathy and Jennie out east. Flew to see them in Kamloops. Car trip with the kids to see them just outside of Montreal. Jack was humble but also the life of the party. What a combination! Jack had a very infectious smile. Will always remember that about him. Miss you Jack.

Jack was truly a special person. I know that Roger loved to “hang around” with him, they would talk about Corvettes and the house and many other things. They had fun. I am so glad they did. Jack was a great guy and so was Roger.

We were saddened to learn of the passing of our good friend Jack and extend our deepest sympathy to Kathy, Jennifer, Andrea and family at this difficult time. Jack is at peace now, and will be well remembered by all who knew him. Our family has known the Bennetts for over forty years and we have many fond memories. Jack was the most influential person in our CN lives, twice giving me the opportunity to work with him, first in Kamloops in 1982 and then in Montreal in 1996. Our families socialized together whenever and wherever we could, camping, playing Trivial Pursuit, listening to music at their home and around our pool. The move to Kamloops proved to be the best thing that happened to my career and we always say Kamloops was our favorite place to live. Montreal was a real challenge for native Albertans like us but once again, Jack and Kathy made our transition to our new lives more enjoyable and much easier than anticipated in a francophone environment. Jack and Kathy were great hosts and our families spent many fun times together at their house parties and sailing on Lac Saint-Louis with them and our mutual friends the de Masseys. After Jack retired, we continued to enjoy their company in their Gananoque home, sailing in the thousand islands and their hospitality at various Plasser events.
We have lost a good family man who leaves a loving family and rich railroad engineering legacy. Jack was a well-respected mentor and team leader who inspired and motivated all who worked for him. Jack had a profound influence on our family and he was the best boss I ever had. We will miss him, especially his sense of humor and gap-tooth grin!

Dear Kathy, I'm sorry for the loss of your dear husband. Jenny and Andrea, you'll no doubt, miss your father who was very proud of his two girls!
He was quiet at times but would come up with a dry comment and make us laugh.
Jack really enjoyed having family around and we had many a joyous family gathering in Gananoque.
Thanks Jack for being so generous to your in-laws.

An Oak has fallen. A valiant warrior has left us - a well-fought fight indeed.
We will miss Jack's dry wit, demonstrated early on when the Bennett and Vieira families met (oh, so many years ago!) as a prelude to Jack & Kathy's wedding. Scene: Vieiras (recently arrived in Canada, still with strong Caribbean lilt) chatting and laughing. Bennetts quietly observe. Jack to his family: "You guys understand anything? No? Do like I do - just laugh when they do!"
My heart goes out to dear sister Kathy, Jen, Andie, Phinny, Steve, Candy, and all of us, extended family and friends.

Jack was, and always will be, a man larger than life for me. He was the most important man in my dad's life and their friendship set the bar for how I think of that word. It was uncomplicated, but never simple. It was just understood without words that they would be there for each other. They could pick up a conversation after being a part for months as if seconds had passed. It drove home for me that friendship isn't about calling on the right day, its just a connection that exists.
In my childhood memories Jack was the centre of celebration. He sat and the head of the table as our parents drank, argued and talked into the night. He was quick to laugh, and quick to argue, always with a twinkle in his eye. He was the first person I can remember showing me that you can argue with someone and still listen and care.
I was lucky enough to get to spend a random weekend with Jack, Kathy and Andie as an adult. We worked on the boat most of the day and played cards into the night. It felt like a transition from knowing Jack as a friend of my dad's to knowing him as person. It was the kind of day that sticks with you.

I will absolutely miss Jack’s humour and wit, and his little teases always followed up with a sly smile.
I have so many amazing memories with Jack, from camping when I was a kid, visits to Quebec, cutting open a coconut with a machete in Mexico, going out on the boat in Ganonoque, celebrating my dad’s 70th birthday in Niagara, and so many more. Jack was an incredible euchre partner (and sure did love to win!), a great story-teller, and a wonderful person to have in your life.
I wish I told him how much he meant to me, but I hope he knows just how special he was. His friendship with my dad has been a joy to be a witness of and to see them bring out the best in each other. Jack will be greatly missed by every one of the Schulzies.
I love you Bennett’s so much and wishing I could give you the biggest hugs ever.

I first met Jack in 1985 when he came to Winnipeg to replace Peter Johnson. A few short years later we both worked in Montreal HQ. In the early 2000's, I reported to Jack for about a year. He was in the Mechanical group in Montreal and I was in Engineering in Edmonton. As a boss, jack was patient, a good listener, and a very logical thinker. He told me to call him every two weeks and let him know what I was doing. That was Jack, he left you to do your job, but was there if you needed help. In later years, Janice and I enjoyed Jack and Kathy's company at the various Plasser events sitting at the "Canadian Table". All fond memories. May he rest in peace.
