Obituary of Father Ed Keyes

Father Edward James Keyes of Gananoque, Ontario, in his 94th year, peacefully at Carveth Care Centre, Gananoque, ON on Friday, January 6th 2023. Predeceased by parents Joseph and Emily Keyes (nee Fowler), brothers Kenneth, Richard, Vincent and John; sisters Mary, Margaret and Helen. Survived and fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews. Mourned by his brother priests and his many parishioners. A native of Gananoque, Father Keyes graduated from St. Michael’s College, University of Toronto in 1953 and from St. Augustine’s Seminary, Toronto in 1957. Ordained to the priesthood in 1957 for the Archdiocese of Kingston. Father Keyes began his ministry as chaplain at the Newman Centre, Queen’s University, followed by pastoral duties as parish priest in St. Michael’s Parish, Belleville; St. Mary’s Cathedral, Kingston; Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, Marmora; Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, Lanark & missions of Ferguson Falls and McDonald’s Corners; Sacred Heart Parish, Cardinal; St. Gregory’s Parish, Picton; and St. Edward’s Parish, Westport. Visitation and Lying in State in St. John the Evangelist Church, 270 Stone Street S., Gananoque on Thursday, January 12 from 2:00 to 5:00 PM and from 7:00 to 9:00 PM, with Vigil Service at 7 pm. Visitation continues on Friday, January 13 from 9 am to 10:45 am, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am. Interment and Rite of Committal at St John’s Cemetery, Gananoque. Reception to follow at the Gananoque Legion. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Canadian Food for Children, Mississauga, ON or St. John the Evangelist Parish.
