Obituary of Peter McCarney
.
John “Peter” McCarney
Having lived his life with the utmost dedication, love and integrity, Peter passed away at the age of 77 peacefully at home in Oakville, Ontario surrounded by his family. After a long journey with pulmonary arterial hypertension, Peter is now free from this devastating illness. Devoted and loving husband to Carolyn (née Sheldon) for 44 years. Peter was predeceased by his parents John and Dorothy (née Beamish), and by his sister Jeanne (née McCarney) (Dr.Samuel) Reid and admired by his many nieces, nephews and extended family.
A proud father to his three children, Noelle (Albert Hegedusic), Sarah (née McCarney) (Dion) Hudson and Cameron. Peter wanted nothing more than to provide every opportunity for his children. He was their guiding light and soft place to fall. He shared special relationships with his two sons-in-laws and he loved them deeply. Humble, sweet and gentle in every way, he touched the lives of everyone he met and will always be remembered this way.
Peter cherished his grandchildren and despite the challenges of his illness, he has had a meaningful and loving impact on their lives. Whenever they came for a visit, his face would light up with joy. He leaves behind six grandchildren – Bryce Webster, Evan and Albert John Hegedusic, Henry Hudson, Owen and Evelyn.
Growing up in Gananoque, Peter had a profound connection to the St. Lawrence River. He loved boating and being on the water. He would reminisce about all of his adventures growing up in the Gananoque Inn and on the river. He was a passionate hockey player, a talented paddler and loved a great game of golf. A true sportsman! He treasured all of the years he spent making memories with his family on the river, where he will always be remembered saying "I feel a cruise coming on."
Peter attended St. Michael's College in Toronto and graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a degree in English. He had the opportunity to travel the world and loved sharing his stories and life experiences. Peter had a strong entrepreneurial spirit and passion for education and Canadian history. Following a successful career in publishing, Peter and Carolyn started their own business, McCarney and Associates. He was well respected by all of his colleagues and led by example. He had a fiercely strong work ethic and dedication to everything he did; truly caring for all those he met and worked with.
Our most sincere thanks to Dr. John Granton, and his team at Toronto General Hospital who cared for Peter for many years. We are also grateful for the compassionate care of the Halton Regional Palliative Care team who showed tremendous kindness in his final days at home.
