My deepest condolences to Georges' family friends and acquaintances. George was a kind spirited person with a warm smile which always said I am so glad to see you. For years Marlene Young , Julie, George and I played bridge once a week. Make no mistake George played a good hand of bridge and was more than happy to beat you at your game.
When I first heard of Georges' passing my first thought was so exciting for him. As Christians we have a promise of eternal life. I pictured George arriving in heaven in his wheel chair. The Lord meets him there with arms open wide. George gets out of his chair standing tall walking towards his Saviour. The Lord says well done my child. Welcome Home.

George was in inspiration to the community of Gananoque. He normalized inclusion to the members of his 'team', including our son. We will miss George's infectious smile, love of the Habs and wonderful sense of humour. Rest easy ... your muscles are relaxed and your are pain free. Fly high George!

George's smile would add joy to my day. He made Gananoque ISS a better place to be with his humour. I loved having him in my class. His passing is a terrible loss to our school- my condolences to George's family and closest friends.

One of the gifts that came with transferring to Gananoque Secondary School was George Funnel. Always keen to tell stories of the weekends and of his beloved Canadiens, George was always "present" and concerned about each and every one of us. Having George at GSS taught each and every one of us lessons about life and about ourselves. He was kind, generous and the mischief in those beautiful eyes will not soon be forgotten. You will be missed, my dear friend xo

George will be remembered for his perpetual warmhearted smile, good natured demeanour and his love of the Montreal Canadiens.
George didn’t possess the many degrees associated with higher education, but through his example taught the priceless lessons of life to the many that walked the halls at Gananoque Secondary School. He taught those around him to look beyond the wheelchair, see the person and disregard the impediment.
Perhaps it has been suggested and perhaps plans are already in motion. A bursary in George’s name along with a trophy should be established in the memory of a man who taught so much to so many in his lifetime.
The motto in the Canadiens dressing room speaks of passing the torch “from failing hands”
George would say that…he would also say Carpe Diem.
Rest in Peace George

There are no words with your passing. You were a brilliant shining star, one of a kind, a brilliant mind and a good decent person with a mega watt smile that was infectious. You enriched not only my life but everyone who met you along your life journey. You taught us how to be compassionate, empathetic, and caring people through your guidance and friendship. You impacted thousands of lives. I will miss our banter about our favourite hockey teams...and yes, I still think you should have been a Leafs fan :) but most of all I will miss you my beautiful friend. Rest in love George.

This is George Funnell. He was an inspiration to hundreds of young people in the Town of Gananoque who lovingly became members of "George's Angels" and cared for him. George passed away yesterday and will leave a giant hole in the Gananoque community.
George's parents were told that he would not live beyond his teenaged years. He would have been 69 years old this November. His parents and sister made the decision to keep George at home and enroll him in the local school system. That decision was made at a time when so many folks like George were being institutionalized. It was ground breaking and very forward thinking.
George had a quick wit and great insight into human nature. Though he spoke in a way that required you to listen very carefully and also used a "Bliss Board", we had some great conversations about so many topics. As a Vice Principal (1988-90) and Principal (1992-96) at Gananoque Secondary School I shared many meals with George, his mother Molly and his sister Julie Ann. Their hospitality, support and assistance was most valued in my time at GSS.
The one weakness that he had was his undying loyalty to the Montreal Canadiens. Thankfully I found this photo of him when he was enjoying a sane moment, sporting a Sens jersey! A few weeks ago I had a Face Time conversation with George and told him that I had someone who wanted to say hello. I then put Habs' Hall of Famer Larry Robinson on the call and you should have seen George's face light up!
I took a signed photo of Larry to George not long after that call and I could see that he was very weak. He chose not to take treatment for the cancer that had invaded his body. Stubborn and determined all the way to the end.
Thank you George for enriching my life and those many hundreds of people you touched.
God bless you George for the many lessons that you taught all of us. You were the best educator of all time. May you rest in the arms of our Lord! Go Habs go!
