There must have been a time when I didn't know Marija Kalnins. I just can't remember it. Our family bought a cottage on Hay Island before the Kalnins did, but again, I can't remember much of that. What I do remember is the constant that she was in our summer lives. Like many other families in those days, we spent our entire summers on the river. There was always a quiet assuredness and kindness about Marija. She exuded love and competence. I can never remember seeing her when she didn't have a smile on her face and a kind word for me. Marija always asked after my mother and father. People many times do that, but the difference was she meant it. She had a quiet sense of fun and humor about her that rippled through the Lodge. She was known, loved, and appreciated by all who were lucky enough to have had her grace their lives. I was one of those people, and am the better for it.

To The Kalnins Families: Over the years I had the pleasure of working for your family and what a great honour to have known Mrs. Kalnins. I have alot of great memories of Mrs. Kalnins and will miss her greatly. At this time our thoughts and prayers are with all of you and your families.
