To John's family: Your Dad and your Mom made me smile whenever they tended the flower gardens at St. John's Church. They were so comfortable with each other and the love of gardening was so apparent before, during and after the flowers had bloomed in "Dolly's Garden". We will miss your Dad and Mom at St. John's Church and at St. Philomena on Howe Island. May God bless your family in your time of sorrow.

John was a big-hearted, gregarious and ambitious man who made many contributions to the hiking community. He was a driving force behind several initiatives that have helped to promote and develop hiking in our area: the Marble Rock Trail; the trails in Gananoque; the "name-pin" that is an ice-breaker on Rideau Trail outings. He was co-editor of the Rideau Trail Association Newsletter for many years and a Director on the Board of the Rideau Trail Association. We will miss his smile and his energy. I will also remember John proudly guiding us on many Rideau Trail hikes in various locales in our region all the while dispensing gems of knowledge about points of interest and history related to the area in which we were hiking.

What a shock it was to learn of John's passing! However, it was no surprise that he was on a Rideau Trail club hike at the time. John was always leading or contributing in some way.
A couple of years ago, I spent an unforgettable week in Newfoundland, where John and I shared accommodation. We were hiking the East Coast Trail, but I was learning about John's reminiscences of living and working in St. John's. He had plenty of fond memories of his time there.
That's the way all of us who shared experiences with John will remember him - with warmth, a little sadness and maybe a smile once in a while.

John was my very first boss back in 1985 when I started working at Aberdeen House where John was the Director at the time. He was a wonderful man to work with and we enjoyed many long talks and laughs over those years. He was a man with great integrity. He did much in helping me to get started in a long career in social services and I owe him a debt of gratitude. I was stunned to hear of his death.

Chris, Dan and families -
So sorry for your loss.
Like everyone we know in the Gananoque area, John and Dolly were held in high esteem. They contributed their labours and love to many initiatives in the community. You can take solace in the fact that their unselfish mien was an inspiration to others.
Be of good cheer.

Chris, Dan and families,
I'm deeply saddened by your loss and send you our heartfelt condolences. From gatherings at the beautiful riverside home where everyone was made to feel like they belonged and were part of the family, to the hours spent laughing as John worked side by side with Dolly turning the gardens at the theatre into a thing of beauty, I always greatly enjoyed their company. I loved the days when they were there because I knew that John's wonderful and incredibly dry sense of humour would keep me chuckling long after we'd talked. I remember being invited to a BBQ at the Cornish home on a sunny August day, only an hour or so after I'd had a tooth pulled. With my face swollen and still frozen solid up to the eyeballs, John offered to get out the blender for my burger so I could enjoy the hospitality without worrying about paying the price when the freezing wore off, unless of course I wanted him to pre-chew it for me... One of my very favourite things about your parents though was that their love for each other and for their family shone like the brightest star in everything they did...they adored you all. There's a measure of peace to be found in John's having passed doing something that he truly loved and the thought that they're together again makes me smile despite the sadness. I'll take a moment today to celebrate lives well lived and loved, and keep you all in my thoughts.

Dan & Chris - we are so sorry to hear about your loss. We haven't seen John for a long time and that was only a chance encounter in Kingston. He was always interested and energetic in everything he took on. And he loved you both dearly, which is the best memory to keep close. Sincere condolences from Bob, Leonore & Jay.
