Pelow, Paul E. After a brief struggle with cancer, Paul E. Pelow of Gananoque, Ontario passed away at Kingston General Hospital, on July 13, 2012. He is deeply missed by his loving wife Claudette (Lajoie), and his sons Roger (Heather) of Gananoque, Gary of Toronto, and John (Deirdre) of Kingston. He is the dearly loved grandfather of Matthew (Sarah), Tim, Genevieve, Jamie, Jacqueline, and Connell. Great-grandfather to Katherine. Predeceased by his parents Laurier and Hazel Pelow, and his first wife Mary Jane Munt. He is also mourned by his mother-in-law Donata Lajoie of Edmundston, New Brunswick and members of the extended Lajoie family.
Paul was born in Gananoque, Ontario and at an early age moved to Toronto. He was educated a St. Michael's College School where, as a gifted hockey player, he was a member of the 1945 Buzzers OHA Junior "B" Championship team. Paul then took advantage of an opportunity to play professional hockey in Scotland for a year. Awarded a hockey scholarship to the University of Michigan, he was a member of the 1950 NCAA finalist team and NCAA championship teams in both 1951 and 1952. At Michigan he received his A.B. (Arts Bachelor) Degree in Economics. He worked for Travellers Insurance Company for his whole career spanning 40 years in a variety of management positions. An enthusiastic hockey coach, he spent many years involved in both the West Mall and Humber Valley organizations.
Introduced to the Thousand Islands at a young age Paul had a lifelong love of the St. Lawrence River, and spent all but a few summers at family cottages on Tremont Island. This was where he was happiest, and he passed on his love of boats and all things water-related to his three sons. After retiring, he and Claudette moved to Gananoque where he was involved in volunteer work, enjoyed playing golf and especially loved spending time with his grandchildren. Summers were spent at the cottage and winters in Naples, Florida.
