We wish to express our heartfelt sympahty to Paul's daughter, grandchildren and his entire family. We have known Paul since 1990, when we brought our boat from the Rideau System to Gananoque. Paul has looked after our boats, winterized them, spring readied them and rescued us when we were in trouble. When Paul started working at Peck's Marina we followed him there. Since our retirement, 4 years ago, we have seen a lot more of Paul. Getting gas or having a bite to eat at the restaurant never took place without a visit with Paul. We will miss these visits. We know this is a terrible loss for you. We hope time will heal and focus the good memories. Henry and I were sorry to have to miss his funeral service and to say our last good bye's. We were honoured to have Paul in our life for so many years. With our deepest sympathy, Helma and Henry Gansen

We are still reeling from the shock of losing our dear friend, Paul, whom we first met in 1989 when we bought our first houseboat. He was such a great teacher, and made friends with many of our clients from all over the world. They felt indebted to him for teaching them how to read charts and how to dock a 38' steel boat. He would drop everything in an emergency and go out with us to fix any problem at any time of the day or night. The length of the trip was never measured by miles or minutes, but he referred to it as a 6-beer or 9-beer trip! We have received so many notes from all those people whose lives he touched from teenagers he taught to throw a line around a cleat to a couple with a parrot who rented our boat four times a year and always included Paul at their BBQs, except the time when the raccoons jumped on the boat at Gordon Island and ate all the steaks. Paul was an intellectual and a mine of knowledge. A friend of ours called him once from England and thought she was speaking to an Oxford Don. He had an incredible vocabulary, hence his ability to finish any crossword puzzle, however difficult. (Melissa told Sandro that this is what he was doing before his attack). His memory was so impressive that he knew exactly which boat parts he had in his yard even if they had been there for 20 years or longer. He was unique and one of a kind. We had planned his birthday lunch for February 10 which we celebrated every year. He will be sorely missed on the River and in the community and will always hold a special place in our hearts. May the road rise to meet you, May the wind be always at your back, May the sun shine warm upon your face, May the rains fall soft upon your fields, And, until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of His hand. Paul... Thanks for always being there when we needed you. For the number of times you bailed us out. For the times you took the Loan to an island for me. For reminiscing over a pint about growing up in Cornwall. You're a River Rat who will be missed. Sláinte! Here's to you! Jan & Jim

The River and the community will not be the same without you...ciao Patricia and Sandro

Paul knew his engines, Particularly the older gasoline motors. He has suffered for many years with his medical problems and is now at rest. He always had a few moments to talk with you when you passed by. He will be missed by the customers at both Peck's and Williams Marina.

I remember when the children were young and we would go camping at Charleston Lake. We always had one of the isolated camp sites. We would load up the boat with all of our things, but the most important was a battery and a 4 inch T.V. that Paul insisted on taking. Or going for a boat ride on the Walrus with Paul sitting on the roof and steering the boat with his feet. He loved being around people. With the guys and with family he enjoyed boating, fishing, icefishing, curling, bridge and ping pong. Over the last 5 years Paul and I became good friends. We would go out for dinner at times, mostly to the Lobster Trap where our son Travis would then cook for us and do a lot of things together with the grandchildren He seemed happiest when he was around his children and grandchildren. I know he always made me feel safe. The old hippie may be gone but he will never be forgotten. He is now and will always be missed greatly, may he rest in peace.

Paul will be sadly missed. A true professional, a straight talker and a gentleman. Didn't suffer fools, didn't much like B/S, but had a way of connecting that made his friends feel special. Paul looked out for a lot of people and always had a snippet of wisdom for those who cared to listen. Bon Voyage Buddy - Fair winds and following seas. Guy

Sharing of his wisdom, experience and knowledge was always a given with Paul. He took great pride in giving freely of whatever he had. There are occasions to numerous to count, where he would sit by my side and offer his advice on boat repairs as he worked along side of me. We were a great team. Throughout his life he has helped many people overcome an immense variety of problems. He was a man gifted with so much knowledge. He had a passion to learn, which he did on any possible occasion. I use to love to watch him read, so intensely caught up in a manual of some sort. But what I really loved was that he just loved to help people. It always made him happy. It always made them happy. And it always made his day, to share his heart of gold! I will miss you dearly, my friend. My love to your family. Karen

Fishing with Doug. "walrus walrus walrus this is Doug". Playing ping pong with "the Hippie" in Rusty's garage. Steak and Bridge with "Mr. Briscoe " at the Island, something we had hoped to do again. The immeasurable pleasure Paul found with his family and grandchildren in the last few years help ease the pain of his passing.Oh yeah, the only person I know who hit a shoal on his way home from curling!

I will miss Paul very, very much. As the years have come and gone and it has gotten more and more difficult for me to be up at the island and to manage cabin and boat and all, I have come to count on a certain few folks to be reliable help. Paul was that and more. I was always glad to see him, and to hang out for a bit, while we talked about the old days and consulted about navigating the new times. Rest in Peace, Paul. fondly, Elizabeth Kincaid-Ehlers
