I have way too many stories about growing up with Browner - here is one that comes to mind. Growing up at the Pancake House there was always alot of business going on. Some of that rubbed off on us as kids, but for some reason none of our ventures succeeded. I remember Clay Express. We decided that we could make some easy money by collecting clay from the nearby pond, bagging it up into 1 pound lumps and selling it to the neighborhood kids. The problem ended up being that the clay would dry out before you could get it to market. It also smelled quite bad. We didn't think of refrigerating it. Well and the fact that nobody wanted to buy bagged mud from us. So we moved on to Pine Gum express. Mr H. told us of how in the war they would chew lumps of black tar instead of chewing gum. I can't remember if was his idea or ours, but somehow we decided that pine gum could also be chewed. We had no tar. But we knew where to find pine gum. So we went out in the bush and cut holes into pine trees. Each hole had an A&P bag affixed under it, to catch the valuable pine drippings. This has been done on maple trees forever - we were on the cusp of something huge. Anyway a week or two goes by and we go out to check the bags. We are pleased to find a bountiful harvest. You must try to imagine how messy this got for us. The bags were a sticky mess of pine gum, needles, ants and dirt. We did our best to separate the wheat from the chaff and then we attempted to chew it like bubble gum. I can still remember how it tasted and felt on the teeth. It was horrendous. It had an extremely strong pine flavour. The texture was sticky yet chalky at the same time. It was very gritty. I recall having to help Greg open his jaw after he bit down on a lump of pine gum with his molars, for it pretty much glued his jaw shut. We laughed hard, I mean really hard, at ourselves as we walked home from the bush that day. That business failed. We went back to being radio DJ's. Good times.
