Many years ago, Vinny started a project at Landon's Bay that many of you have probably heard about by now. I was one of the individuals that he hired that first summer to work the gardens and the trails. He took us under his wing and gave us unconditional friendship. He taught us a lot that summer, never getting exasperated by all our stupid questions and petty problems. For me in particular he became a bit of a mentor, as I had aspirations of becoming a biologist like him. He spent many and hour, over many a beer, discussing the route I would need to take and the obstacles I would have to overcome and through it all gave me nothing but positive support. In the end I followed a different path but everything I do now I do with a tint of Vinny's love for nature. I am truly sorry that the has passed so young as he had so much knowledge to pass on and so much kindness to share. We will miss you Vinny! Gargle shot, Cheers!

I met Vinny only last year but often he would stop into the store and talk to me about herbs and healing. He spurred me on to remember the healing ways of nature and was inspirational in my decision to incorporate this into the Art of Tea. Vinny, I will miss our chats. My condolences to the family. Vinny and I became friends at The University of Guelph. In the summer of 1988, Vinny helped me start my house painting business in Toronto. Vinny was an experienced painter so he also became my main trainer. I was having trouble hiring painters; I needed recruits and found eager French Canadian Students who wanted to work in Toronto so they could learn English. I hired a couple of these kids and put them on Vinny's crew to train. After introductions at the job site, I left Vinny and his two left feet to work his magic. I spoke with Vinny that night and he assured me that the boys would be good workers. His only negative comment was it was a little boring working with the boys as they virtually couldn't speak any English.
The next day I show up at the job site pleased to find the job ahead of schedule and a giggling Vinny. In order to humour himself, Vinny taught the very eager boys the names of the various trees and plants on the property. Too Vinny's great amusement he substituted the correct names for any swear word he could come up with, He had these boys speaking fluent profanity in two days. Vinny will be missed!

There are two White Spruce trees given to the Charboneau family by Dave back in 1997 to bring beauty to our property.
This is an aspect of the man we know as Dave Vincent. A man who loved nature and wanted to share it with others.
The trees were just about 20 inches high when the Ice Storm of 1998 came to this area. They survived the storm and have become very majestic in size and beauty.
As a result of Dave's kindness, there are several varieties of birds that nest each spring, and bring joy to our lives as we hear the sounds of God's creation renewing it's self every year in the branches of these two White Spruce Trees donated by David Vincent.

Dave will live on in the memories of many of us who were involved with his project at Landon Bay. Because of his persistence, many plants made their way from our gardens into the Gardens at Landon Bay and provided joy and delight to all who took the time to tour the property. I'll miss you and your love of plants, Vinnie.

As some of you may know, my new job as Lead Interpretor Horticulture means that I work at a living museuem historic village, and I talk at length with the visitors/tourists/idiots who pass by about historic gardens & gardening methods, heirloom plants etc. ad infinitum ad nauseum. SO, ( here's the build up), I'd been working in the garden all day in the hot hot sun, my brain is fried by the sun, a mild hangover, the fact that I'd been there since 5 am., and the incessant questions of 800+ grade three children. Suffice it to say that the last thing I want is to endure the spanish inquisation at the pudgy hands of a 1000lbs blimp of a tourist. Lo and behold she floats across the horizon and literally blocks out the sun. A Total eclipse.leaning precariously and toothlessly against my rickety garden fence. You get the picture and it isn't a pretty one but on the good side of things she did provide significant shade!.
Just then and more than just audibly, she erupts!!! She had to "touch cloth" with a fart that loud! And asks me unabashedly from amidst her gasey ill smelling cloud "excuse me Sir, what's that plant behind you?" I look, tears coming from my eyes. gagging from her stench, I reluctantly try to choke out a meager, near asphixiated reply. In my weakened state I mumble as I Try to breathe through my mouth"that's dill". It's all the reply I could muster. BUT she's not done torturing me yet, oh no, that would be too easy and apparently, we can't do things the easy way, can we.? The Blimp's backfire sounds remarkably like "oh, that's right, and the little pickles are still below ground"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (continued...)

AND HE WROTE:
...you know me, you know that I do TRY to see the good side of everyone. I do my very best, I try diligently to see the redeeming qualities in everyone that I encounter, to have a modicum of faith in my fellow man, But, sometimes, and more frequently, more often than not, this "faith in my fellow man" is turning out to be unjustified.
I know better than most, that smart people sometimes do stupid things. I learned that lesson long ago and please don't misconstrue my intent here. I'm no fucking Einstein. No better, no smarter, no more insightful (hopefully no worse) than any other member of this species. Tho I am a Homo sapiens reluctantly.
I will concede that life is a freak show and we're all either on exhibit or paying admission to see the other freaks. I've done, arguably, more than my fair share of stupid human tricks in my short little life. BUT...STILL...
My case in point...

Thanks to my sister and brother-in-law, I have had the good fortune of getting to know Vinny over the last 20 years. I fondly remember going camping with Vinny, Ian, Anicka and Ross up in the Bruce Peninsula and having a lot of fun - Vinny made a great spaghetti sauce in a kettle of all things. I appreciated his humour and kindness and his ability to tell a great story.
I will miss him.

Aside from many, many happy memories from our childhood while swimming, skiing, picnicking in Ontario, Dave landed in B.C. with me, complete with tent, binoculars, dog & cage, ready to undertake a 2-month bird-study contract for the BC forest industry. His first warning here was that if he didn't want to wind up nailed to a tree, he'd best not be seen wandering around the BC bush with binoculars on. Loggers hate tree-huggers and BC is full of both.
Only Dave would venture into the remote BC bush for 2 months, alone with his dog!
Regardless, we loaded up my Bronco with 200 lbs. of dog food, 50 lbs of lentils for Dave(whatever they are!) and several cases of beer and headed for the BC wilds to his drop-off point. The first session lasted one week when I received a desperate call that he'd lost his binoculars. I concluded that some logger had wandered in and stole them at first sight, assuming Dave was a company spy. The only thing I had that resembled binoculars and could supply on the spur of the moment, were a pair of "opera glasses". Now picture this - A Paul Bunyon-type logger meeting Dave trudging through the wilds, among cougar and bear, peering through his precious opera glasses.
There were several more S.O.S. calls during that time, equally memorable. I do know that I made several more grocery runs for dog food and beer, but never for more lentils??
At the end of this contract, Dave felt he needed more adventure in his life. So, decided to hitchhike home to Ontario with the dog which he did very successfully am devastated by the news and loss of a very dear cousin who will always share a special place in my heart. I extend much sympathy to Bud, Wendy, Perry and Gary in this great time of sadness and wish with all my heart I could be with you all. My thoughts will certainly be with you for the next while.
In loving memory ............ Cousin Marg (Duncan, BC)

I can't think of any more memorable times in a canoe than those with Vinny. A person can't understand what it was like to hear him tell a story or curse unless you were stuck in a canoe with him. From his wisdom of the outdoors to his jokes, I will always remember camping trips, day paddles, and rides down the parkway on his way to work. If you are reading this you will undoubtedly be in shock about the passing of Dave, as I am, but I am certain that his memory will live on every time I flip over that boat and push it into the water for a paddle.
