I can remember the first time I met Richard. He was a very small 3 year old and was swimming at the front of our cottage, only 3 away from his parents. Well I thought the way he was flailing his arms and srasping for air that the poor thing was drowning. So I pulled him out by his hair and arm to save him. Of course Richard gave me this " what you doing" look and there I have been very fond of the kid.. Will miss him so much....

How my heart breaks for all of you who love Richard as a husband, father, brother, nephew, best friend, uncle, son-in-law, brother-in-law, cousin, life-long friend, co-worker, teammate, colleague, community leader and fellow citizen; in each of the family, work, and community organization settings in which Richard’s passion, leadership, loyalty, love, companionship, strength, conviction, perseverance, and devotion made a unique and unparalleled difference in all our lives. My cousin Richard has been a permanent fixture in the tapestry of my family life since the day I was born. His ability to survive against all odds these past miraculous seven years had me convinced he’d live long into his golden years as his parents did before him. How I so wish this could have proven true for Richard. How grateful I am for the trajectory of my Auntie Bea and Uncle Thayer’s own lives, how their son, of whom they were so fiercely proud and who they loved beyond life itself, survived them. He was afforded time enough to spare them the heartbreak of losing him and was able to stand tall and honour them, at their celebrations of life, through brilliant eulogies only their Richard could have given for each of them. To Heather and to Zachary and to Charlee, as a mother and a wife my heart breaks most of all for each of you. I wish you much love, support, and strength as you journey through this travesty and loss. While the hole left now in your lives will remain, the pain and anguish which fills it now WILL ease over time – it must. Richard, as I’ve understood him to be my whole life, will ENSURE your safe keeping in spirit. His love and light will be with you every day forward from here, cheering and comforting you onward as you continue your walks upon this earth. May his JOY at your three lives having been the very heart of his own warm you now, give you strength, and help heal you each onward into PEACE.
