Karol and I went to visit Grandma and Grandpa at their Florida home in March 1983. I was 19 years old and couldn't wait to get working on a tan. It was cloudy out so we didn't think we were getting to much sun...well burnt we got. My face swelled up, it was scary. When I think back Grandma was probably worried but she didn't show us her concern as to alarm us. She nursed us back to health with good cheer, humour and good old fashioned remedies. She had our breakfast ready every morning and always a good supper. She planned outings for us, Grandpa and her took us to Disney world one day and then to Sarasota another day to shop. Grandpa made sure he took us to church. I remember Grandma saying to us "I'm not that old, I"m just 68". Grandma lived her life in a very disciplined, organized manner. She had expensive taste but never went overboard. She enjoyed life to the fullest. May her soul rest in peace!

Mother worked at Eaton's downtown Toronto. She purchased all kinds of items from Eaton's and they were delivered to the home by the Eaton's Navy and Red truck straight to our home. One day, she was very annoyed because something that she did buy was not to her satisfaction. She tried to phone Eaton's to explain the problem but to no advantage. She decided that she would take me downtown to the store and she found the salesperson that she had done the original business with, and proceeded to explain her situation and the problem with the purchased item. The salesperson started to give her a hard time...so Mother became quite verbal and extremely upset. I was watching and listening to all of the squabbling and all of a sudden when Mother was raving... a wad of chewing gum fell from her mouth. Mother and I were so humiliated but Mother started to break out in laughter while trying to recuperate the wad of gum. The scene became hilariously funny. For many years after we would recall this story among family and to this day, we still are enjoying the memories of laughter. God Bless you Mom...you were a "good sport!"

I remember my mother taking my sisters & I to Mount Royal. We would take a horse & buggy ride to the top of the mountain and see the view of Montreal. After we retuned to the bottom she would take us the maple sugar shack, and buy each of us a maple sugar cone (our favourite treat). Mother also enjoyed taking us ice skating at an outdoor rink near our home.
We would come home and get changed and enjoy red wine in our special little glasses while sitting around the pot belly stove to get warm. We had a lot of happy celebrations with our family and friends which often involved music, singing and dancing.

When I was age 6-8 years old I would stay with Gramma and Grandpa Hunter in Burlington. I remember one night they took me to their favorite restaurant for pizza. This was no ordinary pizza, it was pizza with anchovies!? I have never forgotten the taste and texture of those salty, hairy fish!
Hours of card games were spent in the basement with Gramma while she watched her daytime shows. Two decks of Uno cards would last forever and when she piled on the "pick up 2" cards one after the other, my little hands could barely hold them all. I still love to play Uno and remember how patient she was with me as I learned the tricks of the game.

Mama enjoying a "pop" at the local gas station. The dress she is wearing was a red-maroon color with hound-tooth pattern on light woven material. The beehive shaped buttons were maroon colored. Mom had the most beautiful smile and loved to be with people. What a great memory! Ellen

As a child I spent a couple of weeks each summer with my grandparents. The train trip from Gananoque Station to Toronto exposed me to train travel (I still love it!). Riding streetcars, visiting the CNE, shopping at Eaton's and Simpson's with lunch at the in-store cafeteria, and playing hide and seek with the neighbourhood kids on Parkview Hills Crescent were strange, new experiences and a taste of life in the big city. Huntsville was a whole other dimension. Gramma liked to sing songs from her youth on the car rides to the cottage, and there was always a tasty lunch to break up the long journey. What fun I had swimming, fishing, roasting marshmallows, playing cards and visiting Gramma's friends. She loved to walk, pointing out various birds along our way. She usually beat me at badminton, and try as she might, she could not teach me the game of cribbage (one of her favourites). Gramma and I travelled to Montreal to take in Expo '67. All those foreign pavilions. It was a weird and wonderful experience for a 12 year old! As a teenager, I remember having a conversation with Gramma about some of my latin texts and being totally amazed that she knew all about these dreary old literary folk. But, of course, she loved to read, and could converse on any topic, politics of the day or scandal of the week.
My grandmother was a gracious lady. She loved and had an appreciation for fine things. She dressed impeccably, always conducted herself appropriately, and could teach Martha Stewart a thing or two about household/business management. She was a master at planning and achieving goals, whether it was learning a new craft or building a home in Florida. She was no stranger to adversity either. In her younger years she overcame obstacles and hardships with courage and determination.
In short, Gramma is an example to us all. I am proud to be her grand-daughter and I thank her for sharing her love with us.

These are some of my fondest memories of Gramma:
Her beautiful skin. Not a wrinkle at 98, a walking advertisement for Oil of Olay!
The weekends Kim and I spent every May searching for wild flowers in Huntsville.
Christmas outings in Toronto to see a play, dine at Eatons cafeteria, the Honeydew or Town & Country buffet.
Christmas swim parties at Grandad's school pool.
Gramma's ability to multi task. She could crochet while watching TV and reading a book and putting her feet up on the couch!
Our adventures in Florida and early bird special dinners out.
Her giggle.
As I got older, her ability to listen and offer advice if I asked for it.
Most of all, the importance and love for family.
