One of my favourite memories of John was one summer when he had a small dirt bike on the mainland. Anne and Ellen were with us on the front porch of The Acorn (Gordon cottage) when John came racing around the Taylor cottage on the bike. One of the girls, Ellen I think, said, “Holy Moses there goes Daddy!” I loved those summer days in Gan surrounded by cousins and remember them fondly. I am so sorry for your loss and will keep you all in my prayers.

I am very saddened by this news. I always looked forward to seeing John. Along with his quick wit and sense of humour, I would always learn something cool and historical about this river community of ours. We have all lost a real connection to our past, someone who lived it and could convey it like no other. John was a larger than life character that has left a large void in the lives of a lot of characters. A true riverman in every sense.

My sincerest condolences to the entire Taylor family. - Greg Truesdell

Dear Jane
We were saddened to hear of the death of John.
As you know we were best friends in grade school and in high school. Please let me express my sympathies by writing down some of the good times that came flooding into my mind when I heard the news.
Every morning he picked me up at our Charles Street house and we would walk to high school and back at lunch and after school. We often went to his house and played pool or walked down the hill to the boat house for a ride in the islands.
One day he came to our home and mother had just made date filled oatmeal cookies which we enjoyed. The next day after school he asked my mom for one of those “Glop” cookies. The name stuck and they are still called Glop cookies by our whole family some 65 years later.
After school we played road hockey and in the winter played pond or river hockey.
I recall us going to the Link Factory to see his dad and sitting in a Linkanoe.
A group we went to the high school proms together and often gathered at one our homes for a pre-prom gettogether.
We road our bikes up to the Taylor cottage which was on the water on the golf club road.
John and I often went duck hunting together. We hunted Brown Shoals and the head of Stave Island many Saturday mornings.
We would go by boat to Clayton (where we were of legal age) to have a beer or two.
In later years Paddy and I visited you in Windsor and went to Detroit for a fresh pickerel dinner and I believe you roasted a goose for dinner. Paddy still has your curried fruit recipe.
I apologize for the length of this note but John would forgive me. He will be missed by all who knew him and in particular his family.
John and Paddy

Dear Jane, Ann, Ellen, Amy and Doug,
Susan and I are heartbroken at your, and our collective loss of John. The true definition of a "RiverRat" John's impact on the river and all who love it, has and will be long lasting. I will miss our midnight boat trips off into the darkness knowing that we would not hit anything. Around the dinner table, listening to John's youthful antics was hilarious. The doting father, John was always proud of his brilliant and successful children and equally proud of their brilliant children. Now, there is a hole in the river...that will remain. Happy journey John...

Jane,
To you and the whole family words seem hollow in expressing the sadness in hearing of John's passing. For the 30+ years we have been fortunate enough to know John he has embodied what it is to be in the islands. From "Who Cares" to advice and anecdotes John covered the spectrum and always with an eye to help or support.
Marathon and I will be out this summer looking for him because we know that he is out there on the water

Jane and family my sympathy on the passing of John. I have many memories of our growing up as neighbours. on Stone street. I stayed many a night at Johns family cottage near the golf course, lots of road hockey games and of course morning walks to high school. I enjoyed our visits when you came to Westport for the change over at the cottages on the upper Rideau. He was a great community person for sure.
