My deepest condolences to you Ida, Sheila, Deb and the extended family. As I said to my siblings upon hearing of Bernie's passing, he was easily one of my favourite uncles. Always calm, cool and collected, with a good sense of humour, a charming smile and a gleam in his eye. As Joanne said, we wish it was possible to be there to offer our love and support - and trade memories, stories and some laughter in honour of such a fine man.
Love, Glen, Carolyn, Ian and Mary

To Ida, Debbie, Sheila, Family Members & Friends,
The members of the Canadian Forces Supplementary Radio (SUPRAD) System Oldtimers Association were deeply saddened by the news of Captain Bernard (Bernie) W. Bennett's passing. Those who served with Bernie in Masset and Bermuda will remember him as a true professional. His style of complimentary leadership, pleasant personality and genuine friendship will long be remembered. In 1983, I was the Operations Chief in Bermuda when Captain Bennett was the Operations Officer. I have to say that the working relationship we enjoyed was second to none. Even though he was the Operations Officer, he treated everyone (regardless of their military rank) with dignity and respect. He was a valued SUPRAD family member. Please know that as members of your extended military family, we will be keeping you in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

I was so sorry to hear about Bernie's passing. He was a good, kind man and always had a warm smile for everyone. As a kid I treasured Bernie and Ida's visits to Cape Breton. I always respected the way he carried himself as a military man. This was one of the reasons I joined the military. He will be missed!

Further to my earlier post, I wish to extend Kathy's and my condolences to Bernie's surviving siblings (Tess and Francis in England and my Dad, Mark in New Brunswick). I hope they and their families can find comfort in the wonderful memories they have of Bernie.

Kathy and I were saddened to hear of Bernie’s passing and we wish to extend our sincere condolences to Ida, Debbie, Sheila and to the grandchildren. The wonderful photograph in the obituary is stunning in how accurately it captures his fun loving personality. He looks to be in a "teasing" mood .....ready to laugh. The photograph has evoked fond memories …. a few explained below.
From the standpoint of a kid, Bernie was always the "fun" uncle ...... his exuberant personality, his ever present smile and his unabashed quickness to laugh and "kid around" are what I will always remember. Some of my adult relatives were a bit more reserved and staid (smile). Visits with Bernie and the family were always memorable in the best way. As an adult, I unfortunately did not have frequent occasions to spend a lot of time with Bernie but the fun loving personality traits were always there when we did meet.
Kathy and I and our 4 children visited Bernie and Ida a few times when they lived at Killenbeck Lake. We often camped at nearby Charleston Lake and would sometimes visit. True to form, Bernie always made the visits fun for our kids.
One additional small memory I will share. While Kathy and I were living in Ottawa, Bernie came to Ottawa for a brief work assignment. He had travelled from Masset, BC where he and Ida were living. He joined us for dinner one evening and showed up with a frozen salmon from the Queen Charlotte Islands that he had brought on the long flight from BC. He had talked the staff on the plane into keeping it in a freezer for him during the long flight and had the hotel keep it frozen after he arrived in Ottawa. When I picked him up at the hotel downtown, he was wearing shorts, sandals and a big smile while carrying a 2 or 3 foot salmon wrapped in paper under his arm …… still frozen solid …. all the way from British Columbia. That was Bernie!!! We will never forget him.

Dear Ida, Sheila and Deb and family: We were so sad to hear of Bernie’s death. He was a man to look up to and I was proud to have him as my uncle and godfather. All those lucky enough to know him would describe him as a gentle, kind man with a lovely sense of humour. Wish we could be with you to hug and support but know that you are in our hearts and thoughts.

Please accept my sympathies, Ida, Deb, Sheila and grandchildren. Ida and Bernie have been good friends to us over the years as we shared the privilege of being grandparents to a wonderful granddaughter, Keira. Ida and Bernie, and my late wife, Joan and I, were married in the same church (St. Mary's Cathedral) in Kingston, just one week apart - though we did not meet until years later. Despite Bernie's health challenges in the last few years, I know you will greatly miss your husband, father and grandad.
You are all in my thoughts at this time ~John O'Shea
