Russell: Miranda Elisabeth

Miranda Elisabeth Russell, a lifelong resident of the Thousand Islands, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2018.  She was pre-deceased by parents Robert William Russell and Elisabeth Doreen Shaw Russell, and brother Mark Russell.  She is survived by her husband Paul Garrah, stepchildren Tristan and Rachael Garrah, brothers Richard and James Russell, nieces Elisabeth, Emily, Emma and Grace, and nephews James and Rex.

Miranda’s father once described her as one who loved learning.  After elementary school in Lancaster Pennsylvania (including a fall session at Linklater School, Gananoque commuting herself by boat from Hay Island), Miranda attended and graduated Phillips Academy, Andover MA, and Rhode Island School of Design, Providence RI (BFA & MAT).  Her lifelong passion for Art and Literature was nurtured by an Art Teaching career with the Lincoln School System in Rhode Island, Book Clubs North and South, and her own Art Studios North and South.      Despite her medical challenges, Miranda never took her eye from the ‘prize’; a life offered to explore and discover, to feed her insatiable curiosity and creativity.  The determination, style and beauty she brought to a life well lived was an inspiration to all who knew her.  Miranda’s home base at the ‘Head of Hay’ on the St. Lawrence River was certainly her preferred location and ‘headquarters’.

Her time there was extended, with thanks, to the care and considerations of Dr. Alexander Maitland (Gananoque); Sheila and Kelly of Saint Elizabeth Care (Gananoque); Dr. D. Dudgeon, Dr. W. Parulekar, Dr. V. Kumar, Dr. S. Thain  (and their amazing staff) at the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario (Kingston); and Dr. S Malone of the Ottawa Hospital Regional Cancer Centre.  A day of celebration for Miranda will be held at a later date.
