To the family of Michael Long, My deepest thoughts and prayers are with your family in this time of sadness, for an excellent individual has left us in person but not in spirit. I was a student of Mr. Long's and looked up to him for inspiration and motivation. He was excellent at whatever he did and took pride in helping others achieve success. He was a very very kind man and I am truly going to miss him. He was a man I looked up to and has given me the dream of following in his foot steps to become a teacher. Although no one can compare to the success and many achievements he acquired, it is just the dream of one day sharing his pleasure of teaching. Again I send my deepest condolences and I will personally never forget such an amazing man. Will miss you always Sincerely Robert Latimer

Dear Susan, It was difficult to learn of Michael's death when I returned yesterday. No doubt there is some relief in knowing that his struggle is over but the finality is not easy. Today we expect to live much longer so it is disappointing that he was not able to look forward to experiencing his later years with you. The trip the two of you were able to take during the summer was a wise move. . . .a chance to share a lovely event together. I hope your memories of that trip and of other experiences the two of you shares will provide comfort as you take the next steps along your path in the months to come. Please keep in mind that when you are ready for bridge, I will look forward to playing with you, and should you like to get out for lunch or a coffee, whatever, just let me know. I'm thinking about you and hoping it helps a little! Naomi PS Dennis sends his condolences along as well.

In the few years that I worked with Mike, I grew to respect and admire him as both a teacher and a friend. I always valued his advice and looked forward to seeing his gentle smile each day. As I return to work in February, I will miss seeing him next door, however I will always help to make sure his memory is alive in the science classroom.

Over the past few years, I have developed a relationship with Mike that has played an important part in my young life. What started as a mutual passion for squash and skiing, particularly in the glades of Fernie, developed into a lasting friendship I sincerely cherished. By far, the best memories are those of our weekly squash matches, every Thursday right after the bell! We did record the wins and losses over the years, but I can say that I never truly lost. I enjoyed every minute, just as he did. We have all lost now; a great person, a great teacher, and most of all, a great friend. He will be greatly missed.

Mr. Long will be remembered as a kind, warm, funny and passionate teacher. I had the pleasure of being in several of his classes. Today I wrote a biology exam at university and while I was studying I could not help but think back to my time at G.S.S. and his always entertaining biology classes. Mike Long always found a way to make us laugh. I remember when I was in grade 10 Mike repeatedly told our class that he was a fan of Shania Twain and whenever possible let us know that "that don't impress me much". He was well liked by all students and teachers and I will miss him.

Our deepest sympathy to Michael's family during this time of loss and sadness. Michael will be remembered as a patient and warm individual who touched the lives of many students and nurtured those who required his skills. I had the privilege to commute with Michael to G.P.S.S.in the earlier days of our teaching careers and shared many early morning laughs. I will be forever grateful to Michael for teaching me how to sail, even when my skills were limited. His patience as a good captain was reflected in all his other interests. Goodye Michael, your time with us was treasured and we remember you with a warm heart. Michael and Mary Varey

I am Michael's sister and I spent the last few weeks of his life at his bedside. Michael was always wondering and worrying that he did not make a difference in peoples lives including his students. How wonderful it was to read the thoughts from his past and present students. I kept reassuring Michael that he had made a difference because of his kindness and quiet nature. So I am really grateful to those of you who took the time to write about your experiences with him. Your thoughts have made this time a little more peaceful for me and my family.
