Carol and family, We were saddened to recently learn of the sudden passing of Jonathon. Although our contact, like so many others, was through sailing, we had a high regard for his professionalism, his dedication to his work and his honourable work ethic. His departure has left an irreplacable vacancy in so many lives but none so much as yours and your family. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. My thoughts and emotions are a mixture of sadness and happiness, my father and I were two of clearly many who had the luck and pleasure to meet Johnathan and even more so to learn from him. He and John were my introduction to sailing and all that it brings, that enjoyment and enthusiasm will last through my lifetime at the very least. Thanks to you for a wonderful service it was a pleasure, and no surprise to hear that Johnathan had such a positive affect on so many. I will always remember him fondly, and especially so, when sailing.

We are still reeling from the tragic news of the death of your beloved Jonathan. As you know, dear Carol, we saw him at the theatre two weeks ago and for the first time he was not wearing one of his famous bow ties. I am so glad that I was able to give him a big hug that evening. We first met Jonathan 15 years ago when he did the survey on our first houseboat, La Baronessa. His professionalism and thorough investigative powers and attention to detail meant that he spent many hours surveying our boat, all the while, Sandro was plying him with real Italian expresso coffee. He came back to see us on many a Saturday for just another cuppa. We would chat about good ole England and compare notes. We are so glad that we were able to contribute in a small way to the enjoyment he had with his very close friends when they held their reunion on our houseboat every September. A fun time was had by all. I feel as though I have lost a member of my family. The community will not be the same without him. Not only was he respected in his profession, but loved by everyone as well, a rare combination. There will be such a void in all of us for years to come. Our hearts go out to you, dear Carol, and your children. Patricia and Sandro d'Addario 613 659 4166 Please do not hesitate to get in touch if there is ANYTHING, however large or small, that we can do to help you in your hour of need

Dear Carol and Family, I would like to express my sympathy at this time of your loss. Jonathon was a great help to many through skill, generosity and his goodwill. He always gave much more than a marine survey in his service , especially to tall ships. He was a valued and admired member of the early years and on-going Canadian Sail Training Association. He will be fondly remembered for his own brand of humor - especially on the "poop deck -incident" which he loved to recount! A man with impact and integrity - Missed but not to be forgotten. Dear Carol and Family, When we heard the news we sat down and talked about our fine memories of Jonathan, his wonderful stories and a few sailing adventures but most of all, his willingness to lend a hand when it was needed and just be a friend. At the Anchor Hotel in Brightlingsea our eldest son put together his first two words, baby boat, when early in the morning he looked out onto the 'hard' that Jonathan had so vividly described to us. There are many other memories. We are simply glad to have known him. If you need anything we are just a phone call away. Love, Maurice and Ruth.

Dear Carol,Thea&Edmund It was with great sadness that I received the phone call about the passing of Jonathon. The days around here at the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston will never be the same. I can honestly say that a visit from Jonathon made your day a good one, he was the most happy, positive person I know. Always had a joke to tell you, always we had chats about our families, always we talked about the Alexander Henry. His work as a volunteer here at three waterfront museums for so many years was so much appreciated. His professionalism and expertise for the many hours he helped us out with the "Henry, Phoebe & Mowat Boats" are irreplacable. Our sincere and deepest sympathies are with you at this sad time.

Dear Carol and family, I have enjoyed my many times with Jonathan immensely -at his courses, when he was on my boat, when we split tacks on the water, when we met in the yard at CBM. Lately we would only see each other few times each year, but he always knew who I was and provided his usual witty comment. I attended 2 of the courses that Jonathan and John Mason gave - learned much and laughed much - what a sense of humor Jonathan had, and what knowledge. The boating community has lost the most talented of all marine surveyors. From the moment I learnt of his passing, he has been constantly in my thoughts. I pray for the repose of his soul and for you and the children. My sincere condolences. Lorie Simone

The unexpected passing of Jonathan reminds me of the brevity of my own life. During the time I edited the NAMS NEWS, Jonathan was always a willing and unselfish contributor, and we enjoyed a phone relationship talking about marine related articles and stories. He was someone you could brag about as being a good marine surveyor and he represented our profession well. I never heard him boast, argue, or be anything less than the gentleman he always was to me. In a profession that is filled with the boastful and incompetent, I found Jonathan self effacing, thoughtful, and experienced. He seemed to be enthusiastic about learning and did not suffer from the arrogance and complacency that is so endemic with more seasoned surveyors. I cannot remember a time talking to Jonathan when it was not a pleasure to hear his voice and chat about the goings on in the boatyards. I regret not only the tragedy of his passing, but also that I was not able to spend more time in his company. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy. -Jonathan Klopman

To The Watson Family; I would like to express my most sincere and heartfelt condolences. I had just recently come to know Jonathon both through business and as a neighbor. Jonathon surveyed a boat for me late this summer. I was very impressed with his attention to detail and vast knowledge of the subject. His impeccable writing style made even something as technical as a marine survey a joy to read! I too have an older wooden boat that I plan to start restoring this spring. During the course of this project I am certain my thoughts will turn to Jonathon on occasion. Although our relationship was a brief one Jonathon touched my life, I shall remember him as a true gentleman.

Dear Carol and family, We are all very sorry to hear of Jonathon's passing, and our thoughts are with you everyday through these difficult times. Jonathon inspired and educated numerous people in the marine business, and beyond. He also was a man of great integrity and principle, which has been a positive example to all of us. Primarily though, I will always remember him as a real Gentleman, in a world of fewer and fewer such men. He shared a story with me one time, of his father; also a Gentleman, and obviously the person who had taught Jonathon so much. The story was very simple: his father had gone to an English boatyard many years ago, to commission a small yacht. Jonathon was along to see how it was done. There was little talking, but lots of listening, and mutual respect and understanding between buyer and boatbuilder. At the end of this important meeting, both parties simply shook hands, and the deal was struck. Months later, the yacht was completed, on time, and just as ordered by his father. When Jonathon recalled that day with his father, he expressed to me his longing for the civility of those times, and the honest common sense shared by gentlemen. I will always think of Jonathon in the same way; as a man who sometimes swam upstream, against society's frantic currents. He never gave up, and he always offered the rest of us a wonderful glimpse of something better: calmer, simpler, and much more civilized. In respect and sympathy, Doug Coupar
